The TCRT5000 IR Sensor Module is a compact and reliable reflective optical sensor designed for object detection, line tracking, position sensing, and proximity-based applications. It combines an infrared LED emitter and a phototransistor receiver in a single package, enabling accurate detection of reflective and non-reflective surfaces.

The sensor operates by emitting infrared light and measuring the amount reflected back from nearby objects. Light-colored or reflective surfaces return more infrared light, while dark surfaces absorb it. This makes the TCRT5000 ideal for line-following robots, obstacle detection systems, and automation projects.

Working Principle

The TCRT5000 sensor emits infrared light toward a target surface. When the light strikes a reflective surface such as white paper, a significant portion is reflected back and detected by the phototransistor, causing the output to change state. Dark or black surfaces absorb most of the infrared light, resulting in little or no reflection. This difference enables accurate detection of lines, objects, and position changes.
